Urban VIII (Maffeo Barberini) reigned during one of the most expensive pontificates in early modern history — the Wars of Castro alone, a petty territorial conflict with the Farnese family fought between 1641 and 1644, drained the papal treasury so severely that his successor Innocent X convened a formal investigation into the financial damage. Small copper issues like this quattrino bore the brunt of everyday Roman commerce throughout those two decades, circulating through a city simultaneously hosting Bernini's workshop and preparing for war.
