A partial Latin legend surrounds the design, reading GREG XIII PM (Gregorius XIII Pontifex Maximus), though much of the inscription is partially obscured by the irregular flan edge. |

Gregory XIII called the 1575 Holy Year — one of the most heavily attended jubilees of the sixteenth century, drawing an estimated 300,000 pilgrims to Rome. Macerata, as a significant papal administrative center in the Marche, struck subsidiary coinage to meet the expanded demand for small-denomination currency that accompanied the influx of travelers and the economic activity they generated.
The quattrino was the workhorse of everyday transactions, and billon issues from provincial papal mints like Macerata typically circulated hard and fast. Survivors in any discernible condition are genuinely scarce.
