Enrico Caetani served as Camerlengo during one of the most chaotic sede vacante periods of the sixteenth century — 1590 saw three popes die within a single calendar year. Urban VII lasted just thirteen days before succumbing to malaria, making the interregnum coinage struck under Caetani's authority among the briefest-mandated issues in papal minting history. Gregory XIV was elected in December, ending the vacancy, but not before the Camerlengo's office had discharged its constitutional duty to keep Rome's coinage running.
