| Obverse description | Central device comprising the crossed keys of Saint Peter in saltire, surmounted by the papal umbrella (umbraculum or padiglione), the traditional emblem of the Sede Vacante authority. The keys are depicted with their bows upward and shanks downward, tied with a cord, rendered in a crude hammered style characteristic of small billon coinage of the period. A circular Latin legend runs along the periphery within a beaded border, reading SEDE VACANTE, denoting the vacancy of the Holy See. |
