Benedict XIV — Prospero Lambertini — governed the Papal States with a pragmatism unusual for eighteenth-century pontiffs, negotiating concordats with several European powers and tolerating Enlightenment scholarship to a degree that earned him admirers from Voltaire to Frederick the Great. Gubbio, a minor papal mint in Umbria, continued striking small copper issues throughout his long pontificate largely to serve local market transactions that silver simply wasn't worth supplying.
