Cosa was a Latin colony planted by Rome in 273 BC on the Etrurian coast, the same year the town was founded — meaning this issue dates to the earliest possible moment of the settlement's existence. Colonial Latin mints of this period operated under Roman authorization but retained limited autonomous coinage rights, and Cosa's bronze series is among the smallest and most geographically isolated of any Latin colony. The quartuncia fraction itself implies a functioning local market economy almost from the first year of habitation.
