Obverse description Central field features a rampant gryphon facing left, depicted in a lively heraldic style characteristic of medieval Genoese coinage, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The gryphon, a traditional symbol of the Republic of Genoa, is rendered in low relief with foliate detailing on the body. A circular legend in uncial Latin characters runs around the periphery, reading QUARTARO, separated by dot punctuation. The flan is irregular and slightly clipped, as typical of hammered billon pieces of this period. The overall execution is bold but somewhat crude, consistent with the small module and base metal composition of this denominaton.
