Beschrijving keerzijde Two full-length figures of Saints Magnus and Bruno standing facing one another in a composed Baroque composition; Saint Magnus, depicted as a bishop at left, wears full pontifical vestments including mitre and cope, raises his right hand in blessing and holds a crozier, while Saint Bruno at right, dressed in the white habit of the Carthusian order, holds a book and gestures toward his companion. The papal tiara and keys appear as a cartouche in the exergue, flanked by the date 1690. The surrounding legend references the feast day of both saints.

Aanvullende informatie

Alexander VIII — Pietro Ottoboni — reigned only from 1689 to 1691, and his papacy was consumed by a bitter dispute with Louis XIV over Gallicanism and the revenues of vacant French bishoprics. The Quadrupla series issued under his name is accordingly small, with most types appearing in single or near-single known examples across major collections. The pairing of Magnus and Bruno on this denomination reflects the Venetian Ottoboni's deliberate cultivation of Northern European ecclesiastical alliances at a moment when Rome's leverage over Catholic monarchs was under serious strain.
