Alexander VIII — Pietro Ottoboni — reigned only from 1689 to 1691, and his papacy was consumed by a bitter dispute with Louis XIV over Gallicanism and the revenues of vacant French bishoprics. The Quadrupla series issued under his name is accordingly small, with most types appearing in single or near-single known examples across major collections. The pairing of Magnus and Bruno on this denomination reflects the Venetian Ottoboni's deliberate cultivation of Northern European ecclesiastical alliances at a moment when Rome's leverage over Catholic monarchs was under serious strain.
