The Currency Commission of Ireland operated an unusual consolidated note arrangement from 1928 onward, under which the participating banks — Ulster Bank among them — issued notes bearing their own name but backed collectively and regulated centrally. Each bank's notes were legal tender only for that bank's liabilities, yet all circulated freely across the Free State alongside the consolidated series. Ulster Bank's own network was concentrated in the north, making Southern Irish circulation of these notes genuinely limited.
Two signature combinations are known across the series dates, reflecting the Commission's changing personnel rather than any reissue or design modification. Brennan served as Currency Commissioner throughout; Patton gave way to Lester in 1937.
