Syria's pound coinage of this period was struck against a backdrop of severe currency depreciation — by the mid-1990s, the official exchange rate bore little resemblance to street value, and coins of this denomination had largely lost practical purchasing power. The stainless steel composition adopted for this issue reflected a broader regional shift away from cupronickel as metal costs rose relative to face value.
