At the top of the field, an ancient Egyptian sailing vessel with a large canopied sail is depicted navigating stylized waves, symbolizing maritime trade. In the central register, two groups of figures rendered in the manner of pharaonic relief art are shown engaged in mercantile exchange: on the left, a standing figure attends a kneeling merchant presenting goods; on the right, a standing figure with a balance scale oversees a kneeling trader. Between them, a large circular motif suggestive of a millstone or merchant's wheel is flanked by a geometric net or cloth pattern. Hieroglyphic cartouches with owls and other symbols flank the scene on both sides. The Arabic legend 'يوم التجاريين' (Traders Day) curves along the lower margin within the decorative dashed border. |

Issued to mark Egypt's annual Traders Day celebration, this piece belongs to a series of commemorative gold pounds produced by the Egyptian Mint in the 1980s targeting domestic collectors and the Gulf souvenir trade. KM#604 is among the less frequently encountered issues from this run — not because mintages were dramatically low, but because a substantial portion left Egypt through informal export channels and entered private holdings abroad, making accurate surviving population counts unreliable.
