Gibraltar's pound coinage occupies an unusual constitutional position — the territory issues its own currency under royal prerogative, legally distinct from sterling but fixed at parity with it. The "Royal Arms of England" series draws on the heraldic grammar of the medieval English crown, and the war elephant specifically references the elephant and castle that has appeared in Gibraltar's own civic arms for centuries, a symbol with roots in the Moorish and early Castilian occupation of the Rock long before British annexation in 1704.
