The Parish of St. Helier issued its own currency notes during a period when Jersey had no central banking authority and individual parishes, merchants, and trading houses filled the void. This is among the earliest documented parish-issued notes from the island, predating the formation of any chartered bank with meaningful circulation dominance in Jersey.
Parish notes of this type were generally redeemable at the parish treasury and circulated within tight geographic limits. JN#186.1 is rare simply because survival rates for sub-sovereign, locally redeemable paper from the 1830s Channel Islands are extremely low — most were returned and cancelled once redeemed.
