The Isle of Man Banking Company Limited was incorporated in 1865 and operated as one of the island's principal private note-issuing institutions before eventually being absorbed into Barclays. W. & A. K. Johnston, better known as cartographic and stationery printers in Edinburgh, handled the plate work here — an unusual choice that reflects how small island institutions often contracted whoever could deliver security printing at reasonable cost rather than turning to dedicated banknote houses like Perkins Bacon or Bradbury Wilkinson.
By 1899, Isle of Man private bank notes were already an anachronism by mainland British standards, where private note issue had been effectively extinguished decades earlier under the Bank Charter Act of 1844 — legislation that never extended to the island.
