This gilded variant — locally applied gold plating over fine silver — sits in a product tier common to small-island issuers competing in the international bullion-collector market, where partial gilding commands a premium with minimal additional production cost.
The KM#148a suffix distinguishes this from the base silver strike. Local gilding means application was done on Saint Helena rather than at the striking facility.
