Part of Jersey's ongoing series celebrating the island's maritime history, this proof issue commemorates the brigantine — a two-masted vessel that figured prominently in Channel Islands trade routes during the 18th and 19th centuries. Jersey's merchant fleet was once substantial enough that local shipbuilders operated yards at St. Aubin and Granville, supplying vessels to the cod trade running between the island and the Grand Banks of Newfoundland.
The "Century" designation refers to the series grouping, not a specific vessel.
