Waterston & Sons handled Bank of Scotland's printing for decades, a domestic arrangement that distinguished Scottish note production from the London-centric contracts typical of English private banks. The watermark on this series was incorporated into the paper supply rather than added post-printing — a detail that caused minor grief during wartime paper shortages in later issues of the broader Waterston-printed run.
The 1927–1933 date range spans the worst years of the interwar depression in Scotland, when demand for small-denomination notes actually increased as banking customers avoided holding coin. Notes from the early 1930s in this series saw harder circulation as a result.
