Obverse description The left panel carries the Scottish royal arms vignette with motto ribbon and two supporters, beneath which the denomination ONE POUND appears in a decorative cartouche. The large circular Bank of Scotland seal is printed as an underprint over the central promise-to-pay text in bold letterpress, with the place of issue EDINBURGH, date, and serial number arranged in the lower portion. The Governor's and Treasurer's manuscript signatures are applied below the central text.

Reverse description The reverse is dominated by a fine intaglio line-engraved vignette of the Bank of Scotland's headquarters on The Mound, Edinburgh, with the domed central block and symmetrical flanking wings rendered in precise architectural detail. A lightly patterned guilloche ground frames the composition, and the denomination numeral £1 appears in stylised gothic form in each of the four corners.
