Dumbell's Banking Company Ltd. was one of the Isle of Man's longest-running private banking institutions, operating from 1818 until its catastrophic collapse in 1900 — one of the most damaging bank failures in Manx history, wiping out thousands of depositors. Notes from the 1875–1878 period predate the collapse by a quarter century and circulated freely on the island during a period when private bank issues still dominated local commerce.
The Pick 142 listing for a locally printed Manx private bank note of this vintage is genuinely uncommon in the catalog record. Survivors are rare; most were redeemed, destroyed, or lost in the chaos of the 1900 liquidation.
