Aanvullende informatie

Palembang's tin pitis coinage emerged from one of the most tin-rich regions in the archipelago, with the Bangka deposits — controlled through tribute arrangements with the Dutch VOC — funding much of the Sultanate's political maneuvering in the late 18th century. Muhammad Bahauddin, who reigned from roughly 1776 to 1803, navigated an increasingly aggressive Dutch presence while maintaining enough autonomy to issue coinage in his own name. The extreme lightness of these pieces reflects endemic tin inflation; base metal was abundant enough that the intrinsic value was essentially negligible from the start.
