Obverse description Central field depicts a Hohenstaufen imperial eagle displayed, facing left, with wings spread and detailed feather engraving rendered in the Gothic hammered style. The eagle stands upon a decorative ground, its head turned sinister, conveying regal authority. The central device is enclosed within a double beaded inner circle. Two concentric Latin legends surround the central motif: the inner legend reads + COSTA • DЄI • GRA • ARAG • SICIL` RЄG and the outer legend reads + XPS • VInCIT • XPS • RЄGnAT • XPS • IMPAT, invoking the Christ Victorious formula. The overall design reflects the Sicilian-Aragonese numismatic tradition inherited from the Norman-Hohenstaufen coinage.
