Clement X was nearly eighty years old when he declared the Holy Year of 1675, having been elected pope in 1670 only after a five-month conclave deadlock. The Jubilee piastra was among the standard issues commissioned to meet the surge of pilgrims flooding Rome — an estimated 1.5 million made the journey that year, an extraordinary figure for the period given the distances and conditions of travel.
Emilio Altieri had accepted the papacy with visible reluctance, and much of his reign's administration fell to his nephew's faction. The Jubilee coinage nonetheless represents one of the more competent silver strikes of his pontificate, the Roman mint operating under considerable pressure to produce sufficient specie for the influx of foreign visitors exchanging currency at the city's banks.
