Hieronymus von Colloredo ruled the Archbishopric of Salzburg as an ardent Josephinist — backing Emperor Joseph II's sweeping reforms of the Catholic Church in Habsburg territories, including the suppression of monasteries and curtailment of popular religious observances. This put him on deeply hostile terms with much of his own clergy and population. He is far better remembered today as Mozart's employer, and the man whose inflexibility drove the composer to resign his court position in 1781 after a famously acrimonious confrontation involving Count Arco.
