Reverse description The reverse displays the denomination and designation in five horizontal lines of bold raised Latin lettering filling the central field: I / PFENN: / SCHEIDE / MÜNTZ / followed by the four-digit date. The inscription denotes the coin's status as Scheidemünze (small change currency). The field is otherwise plain, with no border legend or decorative elements, imparting a stark, utilitarian character typical of late eighteenth-century German copper coinage.

Additional information

Brunswick-Lüneburg-Calenberg-Hannover was one of the more administratively tangled of the German states, and George III ruled it as Elector — never setting foot there once during his reign. The Hanoverian coinage of this period was managed entirely through local ministers, producing issues that circulated in a territory the titular ruler knew only through correspondence. The Calenberg line's copper pfennig was struck across more than two decades with little variation, which partly explains the wide date range and the difficulty in attributing individual pieces precisely within it.
