1 Pfennig Zwickau; PoW Camp

German prisoner-of-war camp currencies were introduced following a 1916 Reich directive requiring all Kriegsgefangenenlager to establish internal payment systems — partly to prevent prisoners from accumulating Reichsmarks that could fund escape attempts. Zwickau's camp scrip belongs to that administrative wave. The 1 Pfennig denomination is the lowest practical unit in this series, and low-value PoW Pfennig notes were used heavily in canteen transactions, which means survivors with clean paper are genuinely uncommon.

The Camb#3672 reference places this within the broader Lindman-Campbell PoW catalogue — one of the few systematic efforts to document what was, at the time, considered purely ephemeral material.
