Wolter von Plettenberg ruled the Livonian Order for nearly half a century — an extraordinary tenure — and these small billon pfennigs belong to the latter stretch of his rule, after he had already secured his most famous victory against Ivan III's forces at the Battle of Smolina in 1502. By 1528 he had been elevated to Imperial Prince by Charles V, a status that added political weight to an order already functioning as the primary military power in the eastern Baltic.
The one-shield type distinguishes this issue from contemporaneous Plettenberg pfennigs carrying multiple heraldic shields — a distinction Haljak treats as a separate catalogued variety rather than a minor die difference.
