Widekind of Waldeck served as Bishop of Osnabrück during a period when the diocese was actively consolidating its minting rights against competing local lords. His episcopate coincided with the broader monetization of the northwest German economy, when small silver pfennigs became the workhorse of regional markets. Osnabrück's issues from this period are technically bracteate-adjacent in thinness but struck as full two-sided pieces — an awkward transitional moment in regional minting practice.
