Beschrijving voorzijde Octagonal zinc notgeld token with a central circular perforation. A pearl border runs along the outer edge of each face, with a secondary inner pearl circle enclosing the numeral '1' as the denomination in the field above the central hole. The legend 'PAUL STEINBOCK' arcs across the upper portion and 'SANDOW' appears at the base, both in raised Latin lettering between the outer pearl rim and the inner pearl circle.

Aanvullende informatie

Sandow was a small locality in Lower Lusatia, and like hundreds of similarly sized German communities, it turned to privately issued notgeld during the acute small-change shortages of World War I and its aftermath. Paul Steinbock — almost certainly a local merchant or innkeeper — had these zinc pieces struck to facilitate everyday transactions when official coinage had effectively vanished from circulation. The Hasselmann catalog documents only a single variety, suggesting limited production and a very local distribution radius.
