Rupert II held the Palatinate electorate as regent and administrator before acceding outright, and coins struck under his authority as pledgeholder occupy an awkward legal category — issued in his name but against a pledged territorial right rather than full sovereign title. The distinction mattered enormously to contemporaries and is reflected in the phrasing of the issuing authority itself.
Silver pfennigs of this type circulated across the Rhine Palatinate during a period when the Golden Bull of 1356 had only recently codified the electoral princes' minting privileges, making precision about who held what right — and under what legal instrument — a practical monetary question, not merely a ceremonial one.
