Beschrijving voorzijde Armored knight advancing to the right, depicted in profile, bearing a raised sword in the right hand and a large shield at the left side. The figure is rendered in a bold, schematic style typical of 13th-century Austrian bracteate-influenced Pfennig coinage. The design fills the irregular flan with minimal field remaining. No legend or inscription is present.

Aanvullende informatie

Ottokar II seized the Duchy of Austria in 1251 by marrying the much older Margarete of Babenberg following the extinction of that dynasty's male line, and these small bracteate-style pfennigs were struck throughout his aggressive expansion into the Alpine territories. His rule over Austria ended abruptly in 1276 when Rudolf of Habsburg forced him to surrender the duchy — a humiliation Ottokar refused to accept, leading directly to his death at the Battle on the Marchfeld in 1278.
