Ottokar II acquired Austria in 1251 by marrying the widowed Duchess Margaret of Babenberg, inserting himself into a succession vacuum left by the extinction of the Babenberg male line the previous decade. His minting activity in Austria was prolific and politically deliberate — flooding the duchy with coinage bearing his authority was part of a broader consolidation strategy that eventually made him the most powerful ruler in Central Europe before Rudolf of Habsburg dismantled everything at Marchfeld in 1278.
