Rupert II of the Electoral Palatinate ruled from 1390 to 1398, and this small silver pfennig belongs to his earliest issues as Elector. The "Lilienpfennig" designation — lily pfennig — is a collector and cataloging convention based on the die type, used to distinguish it within what is otherwise a crowded and difficult series of Rhenish bracteate-influenced small coinage. The Palatinate in this period maintained its own mint authority as one of the seven imperial electors, a privilege codified under the Golden Bull of 1356.
Haas M#1 places this at the opening of Rupert II's sequence, suggesting an early die from the first year of his electorate.
