The Bishopric of Dorpat occupied an increasingly precarious position during Johannes VI Bey's tenure, squeezed between the Livonian Order and the growing pressure of Reformation doctrine spreading through the Baltic. Bey himself converted to Lutheranism around 1525, making him one of the earliest ruling bishops in the region to do so — an uncomfortable irony, given that he continued issuing episcopal coinage under ecclesiastical authority for another two decades.
