Gerhard of Schwarzburg's episcopate at Würzburg lasted only from 1372 to 1400, but his tenure coincided with the Bishopric's intensifying struggles against the burghers of Würzburg, who were pressing hard for greater civic autonomy. Small silver issues of this kind circulated primarily within the bishop's territorial jurisdiction rather than the city proper, where municipal coinage increasingly competed for everyday transactions.
