George Louis administered Calenberg-Hannover with a fiscal pragmatism that kept even the smallest denominations in silver long after neighboring territories had abandoned the metal for copper at this denomination. He would, of course, become George I of Great Britain in 1714 — but during this issue's production run he was consolidating Hanoverian territorial holdings, and the coinage reflects a principality actively performing monetary credibility. Welter 2215 is well-documented; the type spans fourteen years with predictable die variation across the run.
