| Descrizione del dritto | Central field displays a rampant lion passant within a geometrically incuse shield, the animal rendered in bold relief characteristic of early sixteenth-century German hammered coinage. The shield is framed by a lozenge or polygonal border formed by incuse lines, a stylistic device typical of Bavarian ecclesiastical pfennigs of this period. The lion, representing the arms of the Wittelsbach dynasty to which Bishop Ernest belonged, is depicted with mane, raised forepaw, and curled tail in a vigorous heraldic posture. The flan is irregular in outline, as is consistent with hand-struck hammered coinage of the era. No legend is present on this face. |
