L. & E. Vollmuth was a commercial firm in Deggendorf, Bavaria, that issued this zinc notgeld piece in 1918 as small-denomination coinage effectively vanished from circulation — hoarded by a public that had watched metal coinage disappear into the war economy since 1915. Private and municipal emergency issues flooded southern Germany that year, filling the gap left by a Reichsbank unable to supply enough subsidiary coin for everyday retail transactions.
Zinc was the default material for these late-war private issues; copper and nickel had long since been requisitioned.
