Brandenburg-Ansbach occupied an awkward position in mid-18th century German politics — a Hohenzollern cadet territory nominally subordinate to Prussia yet managing its own coinage. Charles William Frederick, known as "the Wild Margrave" for his erratic temperament and obsessive hunting culture, maintained a mint at Schwabach that produced these tiny silver pfennigs during the Seven Years' War years. At 0.33g, the silver content was barely worth the cost of minting, yet small-denomination coinage remained essential for local market transactions that larger issues simply couldn't serve.
