| Obverse description | Within a plain inner circle, a boldly rendered Gothic capital letter 'B' occupies the central field, executed in high relief with characteristic medieval calligraphic style. The letter, which likely serves as an abbreviation for Hildesheim's civic identity or a bishop's initial, is flanked by the raised inner ring border. The flan is irregular and slightly uneven, consistent with hand-hammered bracteate-related coinage of the period. The design is minimalist, typical of the so-called 'Buchstabenpfennig' (letter pfennig) type issued by the city of Hildesheim during the late 14th century. |
