Hildesheim's so-called Buchstabenpfennig — "letter pfennig" — takes its name from the alphabetic series of mintmaster marks used to distinguish successive issues across the three decades of production. The city had won the right to mint from the Prince-Bishops of Hildesheim through sustained civic pressure, and these small bracteate-influenced silvers reflect a municipality asserting financial independence it would struggle to keep.
