Anhalt-Bernburg was one of the smallest and most financially precarious of the German micro-states, and by 1831 Alexius Frederick Christian was ruling a principality so diminutive that its independent coinage was largely a matter of sovereign prestige rather than economic necessity. The duchy was absorbed into the unified Anhalt state in 1863, ending its separate numismatic tradition entirely.
