Soest's 1920 Pfennig notgeld came out of the same postwar coin shortage that pushed hundreds of German municipalities into emergency paper production. Edler & Krische of Hanover were among the more prolific small-denomination notgeld printers of the period, supplying multiple Westphalian towns simultaneously — which occasionally makes attribution tricky when notes lack clear municipal identifiers.
At this size and denomination, survival rates are deceptively low. Shopkeepers used these constantly, and few people thought to save them.
