Nuremberg's status as a Free Imperial City ended abruptly in September 1796 when French forces occupied it, and the city was formally annexed by Bavaria in 1806. These pfennigs, struck in 1798–99, were among the last coins Nuremberg would ever issue under its own authority — a municipal coinage tradition stretching back to the 13th century closing out in billon at under a third of a gram.
