Cuba's post-Special Period peso notes occupy an awkward monetary position: issued by a central bank that was simultaneously managing two parallel currency systems, the convertible CUC and the domestic CUP, which effectively partitioned the economy into two tiers. The 1 Peso sat firmly in the latter — the currency ordinary Cubans were paid in, but which bought increasingly little at state stores throughout this period.
The watermark variant designation 'BCC' (Banco Central de Cuba) distinguishes this from earlier printings with different watermark treatments within the same P#121 series — a cataloging distinction that matters more to specialists than the notes' actual circulation history suggests.
