Haydée Tamara Bunke Bider — "Tania" — was an East German-Argentine operative recruited by Cuban intelligence and inserted into Bolivian society under deep cover, eventually becoming the only woman to fight alongside Che Guevara's guerrilla column. Her cover was blown in 1967 before Guevara's capture, and she was killed in an ambush at the Vado del Yeso river in August of that year, two months before Guevara himself was executed. Cuba issued this coin on the 22nd anniversary of her death, part of a broader commemorative program celebrating revolutionary figures the government was actively rehabilitating for the 1989–1990 ideological calendar.
