The Santa María, the flagship and largest vessel, is prominently centered, with the smaller caravels flanking her to the left and right. Seabirds in flight appear in the upper left field. The circumferential legend V CENTENARIO DEL DESCUBRIMIENTO Y EVANGELIZACION DE AMERICA arcs around the upper and lateral border, while the date *1988* is inscribed at the base between two five-pointed star separators.
