The San Hermenegildo was a Spanish frigate that ran aground and sank off the Cuban coast in 1820, carrying a cargo that included a significant consignment of silver coin. Cuban commemorative peso issues of this type were produced in modest quantities for the collector market, largely through state-controlled distribution channels that kept most examples out of general circulation. KM#903 is one of several ship-themed strikes Cuba issued in the mid-2000s targeting European and North American numismatic importers.
