The Banco Provincial de Santa-Fé was one of the provincial banks established under Argentina's decentralized banking regime of the early 1870s, before the national government moved to consolidate monetary authority. These institutions issued their own notes independently of Buenos Aires, a system that generated persistent exchange-rate friction between provincial and national paper throughout the decade.
Pick's South American supplement lists PS802 as rare. Provincial Argentine notes from this period suffered heavy attrition — many banks were liquidated or absorbed after the financial crises of the late 1870s and early 1880s, and surviving note stocks were routinely destroyed rather than redeemed.
