Cuba's early 1990s commemorative program was largely a hard-currency operation — these coins were struck for export sale to collectors, not for domestic circulation, as the peso had effectively ceased to function as a practical medium of exchange following the Soviet subsidy collapse after 1991. The Fokker Dr.I was chosen as part of a broader aviation series that leaned heavily on European and American subject matter, an odd editorial choice for Havana but commercially predictable given the target buyer.
The Dr.I triplane itself entered service with Jagdgeschwader I in late 1917, most famously associated with Manfred von Richthofen, who was killed flying one in April 1918.
